Obviously because of everything that’s happened lately, I haven’t been in the mood to tend to my garden, and that included picking any tomatoes. However, it’s always been on my mind. I didn’t spend so much energy growing those tomatoes just to have them rot on the vine, or food for skunks and racoons. I had a bunch I gathered before the weekend that wouldn’t last much longer, so I made pasta sauce out of it. I had some of it for dinner tonight with sauteed portobello mushrooms and rotini pasta. I’m happy to say it turned out delicious. It’s the first time I actually cooked anything nice from scratch since I lost Niko, so maybe I’m on the mend, I don’t know. Food lately only served to keep me awake and alive so it hasn’t exactly been the most healthy. But I didn’t want to waste my tomatoes. I’d probably eventually feel miserable about that too.

I now have first plum tomato harvest. Not much, yet, but there’s still a lot more that are still green.
The rain has been really good to everyone’s backyard gardens this season. That and decent growing soil made my little tomato plants grow into a rampant monster. Bad weather and burgeoning fruit knocked down the plant and the stakes over the weekend, so I ended up re-staking them. They really do need to be pruned, but I’m just too damn lazy for any of that. I’m so pleased, from the looks of things I’ll have more than enough tomatoes to treat myself to, and maybe some i’ll be able to preserve. Yay!

I’ve been snacking on these Cherry Tomatoes as they ripen. They’re delicious!
(more tomato plant pictures after the jump)

There’s a handful of these already on my cherry tomato plants and even more flowers. My Romas are flowering too and look ready to fruit. In other garden news, my cucumber plant keeps getting torn up by some animal and every time, I diligently replant it. It’s struggling, and doesn’t look like it’ll survive even if it doesn’t get dug up again.
I came back home earlier in the afternoon after spending Saturday and Friday night with the boy. (We went to the Tenori-on Toronto release). About an hour after i got home and settled down, I realized that the power was down. I went to the mall to do some food shopping, and the mall was closed because power was off there too. Not sure what happened, but we all have electricity again.
While the power was out, i went to check on the garden. The tomato plants need a bit of pruning, but I tied up stems in some attempt to organize them. But I’m so happy that they’re thriving. Even my basil is doing well. I’ve been able to use the basil for salads and stuff lately too.
The cucumber plant was torn apart a few weeks ago by some animal. This bothered me, but I tucked the plant’s roots back in. The leaves were all torn up, but the roots, cotyledon leaves and the stem seemed fine. I had pretty much left it for dead, but miraculously it’s still going. New leaves have grown in to take the place of the tattered leaves. Lettuce and carrots are also growing in nicely.
