Some Random Fan Art
Every so often there is discussion on social media on whether fan art is a “legitimate” form of art.
Honestly, I don’t have the energy to argue for or against this statement so I will state some truths: Some people enjoy drawing fan art, other people don’t. Some people enjoy looking at fan art, some don’t. Fan art is very popular, and will most likely get you more attention on social media than if you just posted your original characters.
There’s a couple of reasons why I enjoy drawing fan art.
1) Because it’s fun.
2) Because as an illustrator you may be tasked with drawing other people character’s and it’s decent practice for me.
I obviously don’t think there is anything wrong with drawing and sharing fan art. Most of my favourite artists draw fan art, and it was probably what first attracted me to their work. There is an argument about selling fan art, but that gets complicated. There is no denying that there is a big market for it though.
I am working on more original work, or trying to find inspiration in figures that are not mainstream media related, but you will always see fan art here.
